The Cocalico High School librarian teaches information literacy
skills to students through a completely integrated approach. Research
projects at each grade level and in each subject area afford students
the opportunity for introduction and reinforcement of research skills.
Students are introduced to the best resources in each subject area, learn
specific searching skills to make them efficient users of information,
and then have time to practice and refine those skills as they complete
tasks and projects for their classes. Skills that are covered include
the use of the on-line public access catalog (OPAC), Internet searching
and website evaluation, a research process that includes determining research
needs, narrowing topics, locating and using appropriate resources, note-taking
strategies, and documentation of resources. Ethical use of information
is a key element emphasized through each assignment.
