Music Course Info

Music Studio I and II
This course is designed to provide serious music students with instruction in the elements of music, recording, arranging, composing, and basic piano skills. Hands-on learning takes place through the use of a computer and MIDI keyboard lab. In the lab setting, students learn skills in audio recording and editing techniques. Class activities also provide opportunities to analyze pre-composed music, study specific musical concepts and their functions, and apply learned knowledge to the creation and arranging of original compositions.

Music Theory
This course explores beginning techniques of writing and analyzing music. Students will complete this course with a basic knowledge of writing a four-part musical composition. The course contains components in composition/analysis, arranging, basic theory, basic part-writing skills, basic listening skills, and chord analysis. All musicians who are interested in advancing their musical knowledge can benefit from this course.

Music 9: Music Business and Entertainment
This is a survey course covering the creative and business aspects of the music industry. The course provides an overview of the structure of a record company, performing artists and artist management, copyright laws, marketing strategies and the recording process.

Vocal Course Info

Choir I
Students interested in both band and choir should see Wind Ensemble I/Choir I courses listed under Instrumental Course Info. The high school Choir is open to all students in grades 9-10 who have an interest in developing their vocal skills. This class meets one block every day for 90 days. In this class, students are introduced to choral literature from different time periods and different styles (classical art music through modern music). Students in Choir develop singing techniques and note-reading skills. They also learn to recognize and utilize terminology used in choral music. This course includes two mandatory out-of-school performances.

Choir II
Students interested in both band and choir should see Wind Ensemble II/Choir II courses listed under Instrumental Course Info. The high school Choir is open to all students in grades 11-12 who have an interest in developing their vocal skills. This class meets one block every day for 90 days. In this class, students are introduced to choral literature from different time periods and different styles (classical art music through modern music). This course includes two mandatory out-of-school performances.

Choralaires (Focus period)
Entrance by audition only.
The high school Choralaires is designed to provide more advanced vocalists with a smaller vocal ensemble opportunity. Students will improve vocal techniques unique to singing production. Advanced music reading and musicianship will be developed through more advanced choral music, vocal exercises, and public performances. Choral literature will be chosen from a variety of historical time periods, including contemporary music. Different styles and genres are chosen to provide awareness of musical options and performance techniques. This course also includes some mandatory out-of-school performances.


Instrumental Course Info

Wind Ensemble I
This course is designed for students in grades 9 and 10 who have been accepted via audition to Wind Ensemble. Students will work and rehearse music of various time periods and levels. Students will rehearse and perform basic music reading skills through advanced musician techniques - including rhythm, note values, meter, key signatures, breathing techniques, and composers associated with each work. This course also includes some mandatory out-of-school performances.

Wind Ensemble II
This course is designed for students in grades 11 and 12 who have been accepted via audition to Wind Ensemble. Students will work and rehearse music of various time periods and levels. Students will rehearse and perform basic music reading skills through advanced musician techniques - including rhythm, notes, note values, meter, key signatures, breathing techniques, and composers associated with each work. This course also includes some mandatory out-of-school performances.

Wind Ensemble I/Choir I
This course is designed for students in grades 9 and 10 who perform in both band and choir. Please refer to the course descriptions for Wind Ensemble I and Choir for more details. These courses meet at the same time and students will alternate class time between the two courses. This course also includes some mandatory out-of-school performances.

Wind Ensemble II/Choir II
This course is designed for students in grades 11 and 12 who perform in both band and choir. Please refer to the course descriptions for Wind Ensemble II and Choir for more details. These courses meet at the same time and students will alternate class time between the two courses. This course also includes some mandatory out-of-school performances.

Symphonic Band (Focus period)
This course is open to all students in Grades 9-12 who have developed a high level of proficiency on a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument. Course requirements include regular practice/demonstration of progress. The course also includes some mandatory out-of-school performances. Music will be rehearsed to develop the skills needed to excel on the student's selected instrument.

Symphonic Band/Choralaires (Focus period)
This course is a combination of Choraliares and Symphonic Band. It is designed for students interested in both Symphonic Band and Choraliares. This course also includes some mandatory out-of-school performances. Please refer to the course descriptions above. Students enrolled in this course will alternate rehearsals between Choralaires and Symphonic Band.
